Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has revealed that his coach, Rafa Benitez, has been banned from signing England's Gareth Barry, the current West

Bromwich Albion player.

Gerrard said, in remarks quoted by the newspaper "The Sun" British Sunday: "There was nothing hidden, I wanted to join Gareth Barry to compensate for the departure of Xabi Alonso (Real Madrid in 2009)."

"For me it was not true, although I'm a big fan of Gareth Barry, I was better off playing alongside Alonso, they would have done better."

"I did not think Barry would replace Alonso. The fans loved Alonso, a world-class player. Rafa had to do something to keep him." 
Liverpool had a contract with Alberto Aquilani to replace Alonso, but the Italian did not work for the Reds, where he had only 18 games.
